Standard MKS Toolkit Installation

Before installing MKS Toolkit, we recommend that you uninstall all previous and demo versions of MKS Toolkit older than version 8.0. If you have a previous version of MKS NuTCRACKER Professional, we recommend that you uninstall it, or install MKS Toolkit on another machine.

You must install from an account with local or domain administrator privileges. You do not need to be an Administrator, but your login ID must be a member of the local or domain Windows Administrators group before you can install.

When installing MKS Toolkit for Professional Developers, MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers, MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers 64-bit Edition, the following additional requirement applies:

  • To compile a MKS Toolkit ported application, a supported compiler must be installed on your system.

All MKS Toolkit products of a given version share a common installer.

MKS Toolkit 9.3 and Later

The primary difference in installing MKS Toolkit 9.3 and later versions is Product Activation. More information on Product Activation can be found here: http://www.mkssoftware.com/docs/activation. The Product Activation FAQ is also available here: http://www.mkssoftware.com/support/kb/activation.

To install MKS Toolkit 9.3 or later:

  1. Launch the installer. If you are installing from a CD, insert the MKS Toolkit distribution CD; the installer should start automatically. If you are installing from an electronic distribution, run the self-extracting installer.

  2. Click Install Toolkit. If necessary, Windows Installer is now automatically installed and configured. The MKS Toolkit Installer's title page appears with the option to cancel the installation. If you do not cancel it, the Welcome to the Setup for MKS Toolkit dialog appears.

  3. Click Next >. The License Agreement dialog appears.

  4. Read the license agreement. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next >.

If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, you cannot proceed past this point in the installation.

  5. If a version of MKS Toolkit already exists on your system, the Upgrade Information dialog appears informing you of the situation. You can continue installing MKS Toolkit in the same location as the existing version by clicking Next > or you can follow the advice given on the dialog for uninstalling the existing version.

If no existing version of MKS Toolkit is present or you have decided to continue installing over an existing version, the Customer Information dialog appears.

  6. Enter your user name, organization, and the product key provided by MKS (with your original purchase or with an update request) and click Next >.

If the product key is not entered or is invalid, the Invalid License Information dialog appears informing you of where you can find the product key. You cannot advance any further in the installation process without a valid product key.

If the product key is valid, the installation process moves to the next step.

  7. Next, depending on the MKS Toolkit product that you are installing and the compilers that you have installed on your system, from zero to three compiler-related dialogs may appear.

If you are installing MKS Toolkit for System Administrators, no compiler-related dialogs appear.

If you are installing MKS Toolkit for Developers or above and have no compilers installed, a dialog appears asking for an explanation for the lack of a compiler. Read each choice carefully, select the appropriate one, and click Next >.

If you are installing MKS Toolkit for Developers or above and have more than one 32-bit compiler installed, a dialog appears asking you to select which compiler you want to use with MKS Toolkit. Make your selection and click Next >.

If you are installing MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers 64-bit Edition, a dialog for each of the IA64 and Extended Architecture platforms for which you have more than one compiler installed appears asking you to select which of the available compilers for that platform you want to use with MKS Toolkit. Make you selection and click Next >.

If you are installing MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers 64-bit Edition with the 32-bit Add-on, you may see the dialog for selecting a 32-bit compiler as well as the dialogs for selecting compilers for the IA64 and Extended Architecture platforms.

Note: If you have only one 32-bit compiler installed, or only one 64-bit compiler installed for either the IA64 or Extended Architecture platform, that compiler is automatically selected and no dialog appears.

  8. The File Extensions dialog appears. Insure that the optional file extensions and associations that you would like registered are selected. Click Next >.

  9. The Please Wait dialog appears. There will be a pause while the installer prepares to continue, then the MKS Toolkit Activation dialog appears.

  10. From this dialog, you can launch web pages to get more information on Product Activation and the MKS Privacy Policy. Click the Policy button to view the MKS Privacy Policy, the Data Sent button to view the information that will be sent to the MKS Product Activation server during activation, or the Info button for an overview of how MKS Toolkit Product Activation works.

Once you have viewed the desired information, click Next >. The MKS Toolkit Activation dialog appears.

  11. Select how and when you would like to activate MKS Toolkit.

If you select to activate MKS Toolkit after registration, click Next >. You have the option of launching the MKS Toolkit control panel applet at the end of the installation process to allow you to activate your toolkit. This is usually the choice to make if you want to activate more than one named user.

If you select that you have been supplied with a license.dat file for activation (that is, you have a Site License), Click Next >. The Enter activation license dialog appears. Enter the location of the license.dat file on your system and click Next >.

If you select to activate MKS Toolkit now, enter the e-mail address and password associated with your MKS Product Activation Account. If you do not yet have an MKS Product Activation Account, click the Register for an activation account button to launch a web page that will guide you through the creation of an account.

If you are activating now from a license that uses concurrent authenticated users, you are also prompted as to how many concurrent users, you would like to activate at this time. If you want to activate the maximum number of concurrent users allowed by your account, leave this field blank.

When you have completed filling out this dialog, click Next >.

Note: You can modify your Product Activation choices after installation from the Activation tab of the MKS Toolkit control panel applet.

  12. The Select Type dialog appears. Select one of the installation options—Typical, Compact, or Custom and click Next >.

The Typical and Compact options are defined differently for each MKS Toolkit product. If you select one of these options, the Destination Folder dialog appears. If there is no existing MKS Toolkit installation, you can change the directory in which MKS Toolkit is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

If you select the Custom option, the Custom Setup dialog appears, allowing you to select and deselect the various components included in the MKS Toolkit product you have purchased.

Clicking Help on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Custom Setup Tips dialog explaining what the various icons on the Custom Setup dialog mean Click OK to close this dialog.

Clicking Space on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Disk Space Requirements dialog.

If there is no existing MKS Toolkit installation, you can change the directory in which MKS Toolkit is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

Once you have decided on the components that you want installed, click Next >.

  13. The "Firewall Configuration" dialog appears. On this dialog, you can set whether or not to create firewall exceptions for the various MKS utilities and services that require network access. Once you have chosen your settings, click Next > The Ready to Install the Program dialog appears.

  14. Click Install to begin the installation of MKS Toolkit files. The Installing MKS Toolkit dialog appears and shows the progress of the installation. When the installation is complete, the Setup Completed dialog appears. You can choose whether or not to display the release notes and depending upon how you chose to activate MKS Toolkit, you may also be presented with the option of launching the MKS Toolkit control panel applet to complete Product Activation.

  15. Click Finish to complete the installation. If you chose to display the release notes, the installer launches a browser window displaying these notes. Similarly, if you chose to launch the MKS Toolkit control panel applet, it now launches.

  16. If the installation requires you to restart your system for the changes to take effect, a dialog appears informing you of this fact.

Click Yes to restart your system now.

Click No if you would prefer to restart your system manually later.

Return to main MKS Installation page.
