Standard AlertCentre Installation

Before installing the AlertCentre add-on:

  • make sure that you have up-to-date versions of the MDAC drivers installed
  • insure that you have installed MKS Toolkit v8.7 patch 3 or higher

To install the Add-On follow these steps:

  1. Download and run the self-extracting installer.

  2. The AlertCentre Installation Wizard should appear. Click Next >.

  3. Select a location to unpack the AlertCentre distribution to. The default is the systems TEMP directory. Click Change... to select a different location and click Next > to continue unpacking the distribution.

  4. If necessary, Windows Installer and Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine is now automatically installed and configured. The AlertCentre Installer's title page appears with the option to cancel the installation. If you do not cancel it, the Welcome to the Setup for MKS AlertCentre dialog appears.

  5. Click Next >. The License Agreement dialog appears.

  6. Read the license agreement. Select I accept the terms in the terms in the license agreement and click Next >.

If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, you cannot proceed past this point in the installation.

  7. Enter your user name and organization in the appropriate fields and click Next >.

  8. The Please Wait dialog appears. There will be a pause while the installer prepares to continue, then the Setup Type dialog appears.

  9. Select one of the installation options—Typical, Compact, or Custom and click Next >.

If you select Typical or Compact, the Destination Folder dialog appears. If there is no existing MKS Toolkit installation, you can change the directory in which MKS AlertCentre is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

If you select the Custom option, the Custom Setup dialog appears, allowing you to select and deselect the various components included in MKS AlertCentre.

Clicking Help on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Custom Setup Tips dialog explaining what the various icons on the Custom Setup dialog mean Click OK to close this dialog.

Clicking Space on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Disk Space Requirements dialog.

If there is no existing MKS Toolkit installation, you can change the directory in which MKS AlertCentre is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

Click Next >. The AlertCentre Configuration dialog appears. This dialog describes AlertCentre and talks about some of the configuration choices you will need to make.

  10. Another AlertCentre Configuration information dialog appears, click Next >.

  11. From this dialog, you can choose the Web server that you would like to use with AlertCentre: Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS) or MKS Simple Web Server (SWS). If IIS is not available on your system (or all unknown CGI extensions are not enabled), SWS is your only choice.

On a server class machine, IIS can be configured either as a virtual directory on the default site or on its own site. On a workstation class machine, you can only configure it as a virtual directory. More information on virtual directories and the default site can be found in the IIS online documentation.

Choose IIS if you need encrypted access to the console, or if it is already in use on the server and it makes little sense to manage another piece of software; otherwise SWS should suffice. SWS will be the default for all new installations.

From this dialog, you can also choose what TCP/IP port will be used. By default, port 8080 is displayed, but you can change this if you want to use a different port.

Note: If you want to change the options chosen on this dialog after installation, you can do so from the Windows Control Panel. Select Add or Remove Programs, click on MKS AlertCentre in the list of programs presented, and finally, click Change.

Click Next > to continue. The next AlertCentre Configuration dialog appears.

  12. Specify the e-mail address and SMTP server for AlertCentre to use when sending e-mail alerts in the E-mail From Address and SMTP Server fields. The e-mail address does not to be the address of a real account.

An attempt is made to choose reasonable defaults for these fields, so you may not need to change either value. You can change these values at any time after installation is complete.

Click Next > to continue. The next AlertCentre Configuration dialog appears.

  13. From this dialog , chose whether AlertCentre will use a 12-hour or 24-hour clock.

You can also choose whether the machine you are installing on will run as a primary or backup server. A backup server takes over when your primary server goes down, ensuring that you have uninterrupted coverage at all times. If you are unsure, choose Primary.

You can change these values at any time after installation is complete.

    Click Next > to continue.

  14. The Ready to Install the Program dialog appears. Click Install to begin the installation of AlertCentre files. The Installing MKS AlertCentre dialog appears and shows the progress of the installation. When the installation is complete, the Setup Completed dialog appears. You can choose whether or not to display the release notes.

  15. Click Finish to complete the installation. If you chose to display the release notes, the installer launches a browser window displaying these notes.

  16. If the installation requires you to restart your system for the changes to take effect, a dialog appears informing you of this fact.

Click Yes to restart your system now.

Click No if you would prefer to restart your system manually later.
While you may not be asked to reboot, environment variables created by the installer are not made available to the services until after a reboot. As a result, some services, like the SNMP Trap Service, will not be able to deliver traps to AlertCentre without the reboot.

The installer also creates three standard schedules, secures access to the configuration console and the components, creates a local group called AlertCentre Administrators and creates an empty configuration database ready to use the AlertCentre.

Note: In a few rare situations, the MSDE installer requires a machine reboot. This occurs after the MSDE installation is complete but before the actual installation of AlertCentre begins. When this happens, the AlertCentre installer appears to fail. Please just reboot the machine and retry the installation.

The actual installation of AlertCentre is now complete and the AlertCentre User Guide will be available from the Start menu. Chapter 3 of this document, "Getting Started", gives complete instructions for configuring AlertCentre and creating a simple monitor.
