MKS Toolkit Patch Installation Instructions

MKS Toolkit patches update a major release with problem fixes and minor new functionality. For a given release, you need only install the latest patch as that patch includes all changes made in previous patches for that release. For example, MKS Toolkit 8.5 Patch 2 includes all the changes made in MKS Toolkit 8.5 Patch 1 as well.

Installing a Patch Normally

Normal installation of an MKS Toolkit patch is simple. The patch is downloaded from the MKS ftp site and is in the form of a Windows executable. To apply the patch to the MKS Toolkit installation on your system, simply run the executable and when prompted, enter the password which should be supplied by MKS Customer Support.

Installing a Patch Manually

The normal patch installation method works fine when you are upgrading a single system. However, if you need to upgrade several systems across a network, it is best to unpack the patch and install it manually.

Manual installation of an MKS Toolkit patch consists of two parts. The first is to extract the relevant files from the executable and the second is the actual installation.

The MKS Toolkit patch files are typically extracted and copied to a distribution_directory. By default, this is the %TEMP% directory, but this can be changed during the installation.

When the Unpack only check box is selected during a MKS Toolkit patch installation, the patch is unpacked to distribution_directory, but not installed. However, you will be prompted for the patch password (available from MKS Customer Support) before the files can be extracted. This directory contains 4 files with .msp extensions and a readme file.

To actually install the patch follow these instructions:

  1. Select the appropriate msp file (MSP_FILE) based on which MKS Toolkit product you have installed and from where you installed it.

    Installed From Product MSP_FILE
    CD All Products CD.msp
Web download      MKS Toolkit for System Administrators    tksa.msp
Web download MKS Toolkit for Interoperability tkio.msp
Web download MKS Toolkit for Developers tkdev.msp

You can determine if your MKS Toolkit product was installed from a Web download by consulting the MKS Toolkit control panel applet. From the Support Information tab of this applet, select Installed Components from the Category dropdown list. If a product was installed from a Web download, the phrase "Web Download" appears as part of the product name. If this phrase does not appear, you can assume the product was installed from a CD.

  2. If individual users on the network have already installed the version of MKS Toolkit to which the patch applies, those users can then apply the patch using the selected MSP_FILE:
    	cd distribution_directory
    	msiexec.exe /p MSP_FILE /qn

Because the patch password was suppllied when the patch was unpacked, it is not needed during the actual application of the patch.

  3. If individual users on the network have not already installed the version of MKS Toolit to which the patch applies, you can create a patched version of the administrative image. This allows users to install the both MKS Toolkit and the patch in one step.

If you have not already created an administrative image (toolkit.msi) of MKS Toolkit, follow the instructions here to do so.

Once you have an administrative image (network_location/toolkit.msi where network_location is the location on the network of the administrative image), you can apply the patch to this image with:
    	cd distribution_directory
    	msiexec.exe /p MSP_FILE /a network_location/toolkit.msi

Individual users on the networks can then install both MKS Toolkit and the patch with:
    	cd network_location
    	msiexec.exe /I toolit.msi

Return to main MKS Installation page.
