Standard MKS X/Server Installation

If you have SCO XVision Eclipse installed, you must uninstall it, or install MKS X/Server on another machine.

You should turn off all virus protection software before installing MKS X/Server. Such software can sometimes cause the installation to be interrupted and rolled back. Once you have installed MKS X/Server, you can turn virus protection back on.

You must install from an account with local or domain administrator privileges. You do not need to be an Administrator, but your login ID must be a member of the local or domain Windows Administrators group before you can install.

All MKS X/Server products share a common installer. To install your product:

  1. Launch the installer. If you are installing from a CD, insert the MKS X/Server distribution CD; the installer should start automatically. If you are installing from an electronic distribution, run the self-extracting installer to extract the installation files to a directory on your machine.

  2. If necessary, Windows Installer is automatically installed and configured. The Welcome to the Setup for MKS X/Server dialog appears.

  3. Click Next >. The License Agreement dialog appears.

  4. Read the license agreement. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement and click Next >.

If you do not accept the terms of the license agreement, you cannot proceed past this point in the installation.

  5. If a version of MKS X/Server already exists on your system, the Upgrade Information dialog appears informing you of the situation. You can continue installing MKS X/Server in the same location as the existing version by clicking Next > or you can follow the advice given on the dialog for uninstalling the existing version.

If no existing version of MKS X/Server is present or you have decided to continue installing over an existing version, the You must Register to obtain a PIN dialog appears.

  6. If you do not have a PIN (Personal Identification Number), click Register for a PIN to register your MKS X/Server and receive a PIN. The installer launches a browser window showing the registration form.

    1. Fill out the registration form and click the appropriate Submit button for how you want to submit your registration to MKS Software. If you submitted your registration by Internet, a new page appears confirming your registration; otherwise, instructions on submitting your registration appear.

You need only register your software once for each unique serial number.

    2. Close the browser window

Once you have obtained your PIN or if you don't need one (for example, you are updating an existing MKS X/Server product), click I have a PIN > on the You must Register to obtain a PIN dialog. The Customer Information dialog appears.

  7. Enter your user name, organization, serial number, and PIN in the appropriate fields and click Next >.

Your serial number is located on the MKS X/Server box (for new users) or contained in an e-mail (for MKS Web store purchases). If you are updating a previous version of MKS X/Server, use the serial number from that version.

Your PIN was provided by MKS when you purchased the product (for example, via e-mail) or obtained by registering your product in the previous step. No PIN is required when updating an existing product.

  8. When installing a new MKS X/Server product as opposed to updating an existing one, the Access Key dialog may appear.

Enter your Access Key (provided by MKS) and click Next >.

  9. Select one of the installation options—Typical, Compact, or Custom and click Next >.

If you select the Typical or Compact option, the Destination Folder dialog appears. If there is no existing MKS X/Server installation, you can change the directory in which MKS X/Server is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

If you select the Custom option, the Custom Setup dialog appears, allowing you to select and deselect the various components included in the MKS X/Server product you have purchased.

Clicking Help on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Custom Setup Tips dialog explaining what the various icons on the Custom Setup dialog mean Click OK to close this dialog.

Clicking Space on the Custom Setup dialog displays the Disk Space Requirements dialog.

If there is no existing MKS X/Server installation, you can change the directory in which MKS X/Server is installed by clicking the Change... button and entering the new directory.

Once you have decided on the components that you want installed, click Next >.

  10. On operating systems that include the Windows Firewall, the Firewall Configuration dialog appears, letting you specify firewall exceptions for various components of MKS X/Server. Once you have set up your exceptions, click Next >.

  11. The Ready to Install the Program dialog appears. Click Install to begin the installation of MKS X/Server files. The Installing MKS X/Server dialog appears and shows the progress of the installation. When the installation is complete, the Setup Completed dialog appears. You can choose whether or not to display the release notes.

  12. Click Finish to complete the installation. If you chose to display the release notes, the installer launches a browser window displaying these notes.

  13. If the installation requires you to restart your system for the changes to take effect, a dialog appears informing you of this fact.

Click Yes to restart your system now.

Click No if you would prefer to restart your system manually later.

Return to main Installation page.
