UNIX to Windows Porting Case Study
With an increasing demand for PC-based, multi-platform products, enterprises around the world are looking for solutions that can bridge UNIX and Windows, so they can offer more than a single-platform product and remain competitive. When faced with the decision to duplicate existing UNIX/Linux applications on Windows and take advantage of the new Web development model, the options are clear: either perform a complete rewrite, or find a tool that lets you port the application.
Rewriting old applications can take anywhere from months to years and requires ongoing maintenance of two separate source code bases, which is a major ongoing cost. The second option--porting--should be carefully considered because the price for selecting the wrong tool can be high.

One of the greatest challenges developers face today is supporting their applications across different platforms. The growth of Windows and the continued demand for UNIX in today's global organizations has created a need for robust and reliable administrative solutions. In the past, Lehman Brothers had supported the GDSS trading platform across a number of Sun workstations running UNIX. The cost of maintaining GDSS on Sun workstations, however, was high and the development staff needed more power and flexibility in order to take advantage of new Web development models. Their options were clear: they could rewrite the entire 8-year-old application natively to the Microsoft Windows API (WIN32) and attempt to add functionality to a system that was virtually obsolete. Or they could port the application from UNIX to Microsoft Windows using PTC MKS Toolkit for Enterprise Developers from PTC. Lehman Brothers soon concluded that the latter route would be the fastest and most economical way to migrate its software from UNIX to Windows and quickly leave their Sun workstations behind.
